[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi · photo) has opened the Jungnang-gu Gender Equality Activity Center (461 Yongmasan-ro) to create a gender-equal local community and spread a culture of gender equality, and it has been in full operation since this month.

The Gender Equality Activity Center began in 2018 based on proposals from local residents and was selected as a pledge project. Since then, through discussions on making Jungnang gender-equal, meetings to promote the Gender Equality Activity Center, forming consultative bodies, and enacting the Basic Ordinance on Gender Equality, it settled in the Mangwoo Majung Village Vitality Center last April.

Going forward, under active mutual cooperation with local activists, the center plans to lead various projects such as training and education of gender equality activists, spreading gender equality culture, archiving activities, and building gender equality networks to create a gender-equal local community.

The Jungnang-gu Gender Equality Activity Center, which began full-scale activities this month, is currently continuously planning and conducting programs such as Our Neighborhood Gender School, the Hilarious Gender Equality Introductory Course, and Self-Care Workshops.

Our Neighborhood Gender School is a project that supports groups or organizations planning and operating gender equality activities such as lectures, workshops, and cultural programs needed by residents. It provides support for program lecture fees and labor costs.

By applying for the Hilarious Gender Equality Introductory Course, participants can listen to lectures by experts in each field on four topics: mobility independence and exercise, appearance obsession, and women’s films. In the Self-Care Workshop, participants take time to look at their own bodies beyond gender.

Details on how to participate in each program can be found on the Jungnang-gu Gender Equality Activity Center blog.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “I hope the Gender Equality Activity Center will play a significant role in spreading gender equality culture and improving awareness in the local community,” adding, “We will continue to work to eliminate gender-based prejudice and establish a healthy culture of gender equality.”

The district will hold a commissioning ceremony for the Gender Equality Activity Center’s operating committee members on the 24th.

Yeongdeungpo-gu (Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is launching a project to improve young people’s awareness of climate and environmental changes in earnest.

Concerns about the accelerating climate and environmental changes are growing. According to a survey on ‘Climate Change and Sustainability Awareness’ conducted by a polling agency last year, 93% of Koreans agreed that ‘global warming is a serious threat to humanity.’ However, the agreement rate among young people under 30, considered the future generation, was somewhat lower than the average.

Accordingly, the district is promoting the ‘2022 Yeongdeungpo Youth Climate and Environmental Awareness Change-UP’ project to help young people develop interest in climate and environmental changes and build the capacity to respond proactively.

This is not a one-time event but a continuous activity aimed at wisely responding to the urgent climate crisis and providing young people with opportunities to participate in problem-solving, helping them grow into mature citizens.

The project was selected as a Seoul City youth policy activation project last year and was launched with an inauguration ceremony for 31 young people forming the ‘Climate and Environmental Youth Supporters’ on the 11th.

The inauguration ceremony included an introduction to the supporters’ activities, commissioning certificate presentation, lectures by climate crisis and environmental experts, and discussions among supporters.

Until November, the supporters will engage in activities such as ▲creating card news, articles, and blog posts using SNS ▲holding forums to establish climate and environmental policy ideas ▲conducting youth awareness surveys ▲planning and operating eco-friendly experience programs ▲and organizing eco-friendly diet challenges and producing guidebooks.

After the activity period ends, the results will be shared, and outstanding supporters will be selected for a completion ceremony and awards ceremony.Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “The youth supporters’ activities will be a great opportunity to improve awareness of climate and environmental changes,” adding, “We will continue to implement various policies for sustainable growth.”
