[Asia Economy Sejong=Reporter Lee Jun-hyung] The labor authorities have referred the CEO of Sampyo Industry, the first investigation target under the Serious Accident Punishment Act, to the prosecution.


The Ministry of Employment and Labor announced on the 13th that it has concluded the investigation into the collapse accident at Sampyo Industry's Yangju quarry and sent CEO Lee Jong-shin to the Uijeongbu District Prosecutors' Office with a "prosecution opinion." CEO Lee is suspected of violating the Serious Accident Punishment Act. The head of Sampyo Industry's Yangju branch was referred to the prosecution on charges of violating the Industrial Safety and Health Act.

Earlier, on January 29, a collapse of about 300,000 square meters of soil occurred at Sampyo Industry's quarry located in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. Three workers, including two drilling machine operators and one excavator operator, died in the accident. This was the first major industrial accident that occurred three days after the Serious Accident Punishment Act came into effect on January 27.


Meanwhile, as of this date, 83 cases have been recorded under the Serious Accident Punishment Act. The Ministry of Employment and Labor has filed 56 cases on charges of violating the Industrial Safety and Health Act. The ministry has filed 37 cases on charges of violating the Serious Accident Punishment Act. The ministry has already completed investigations on 10 cases under the Serious Accident Punishment Act and referred them to the relevant prosecution offices.
