[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] German, French, and Italian leaders are reported to visit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, before the upcoming Group of Seven (G7) summit at the end of this month, according to the German weekly Bild am Sonntag (BamS) on the 11th (local time).
According to the report, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi are scheduled to head to Kyiv before the G7 summit held in Germany from the 26th to the 28th.
Germany and France have been discussing plans to jointly visit Kyiv, but President Macron insisted on going after the French parliamentary elections on the 19th. Prime Minister Draghi joined the visit following France's proposal.
Attention is focused on whether the three leaders will pledge additional arms supplies to Ukraine or support for Ukraine's European Union (EU) membership during this visit. Ukraine applied for EU membership on February 28, just four days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The European Commission is expected to present its opinion on granting candidate status to Ukraine on the 17th.
Within the EU, the Baltic States, Italy, and Ireland strongly support Ukraine's EU membership, while France, Germany, and the Netherlands are known to hold a more skeptical stance.
