South Korea-Canada Defense Ministers "Cooperate to Stabilize Ukraine Situation"

[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] South Korea and Canada have agreed to cooperate through bilateral and multilateral meetings to stabilize the situation in Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of National Defense on the 10th, Lee Jong-seop, Minister of National Defense, who is visiting Singapore to attend the Asia Security Conference (Shangri-La Dialogue), held talks with the Canadian Minister of National Defense on the 10th and discussed the Indo-Pacific strategies of both countries.

Anita Anand, Canadian Minister of National Defense, stated during the meeting that Canada hopes for active engagement in the Indo-Pacific region and plans to announce Canada’s Indo-Pacific strategy this fall. In response, Minister Lee explained that the Korean government is also formulating its Indo-Pacific strategy. He evaluated Canada’s commitment to contributing to regional stability, emphasizing that South Korea and Canada share values such as freedom, democracy, and market economy principles.

Minister Lee expressed gratitude, noting that since establishing diplomatic relations in 1963, Canada has been a strategic partner and traditional ally, especially appreciating Canada’s contribution to peace and development on the Korean Peninsula, including dispatching the third-largest number of troops among the countries participating in the Korean War.

Canada is participating in international operations under United Nations Security Council resolutions by dispatching patrol aircraft and frigates to monitor illicit trade through ship-to-ship transfers by North Korea in the Indo-Pacific maritime domain. Minister Lee is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral talks in the afternoon with the defense ministers of China, New Zealand, and Singapore.
