[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] A memorial photo exhibition featuring the late Cho Yang-ho, former chairman of Hanjin Group, will be held. The exhibition, taking place for three weeks from the 7th at Ilwoo Space in the Korean Air Building in Seosomun, Jung-gu, Seoul, showcases various photographic works personally taken by the late Chairman Cho Yang-ho. The exhibition includes 45 photographs taken by the late chairman during his lifetime, along with cameras and equipment he personally used.
Chairman Cho Won-tae said in his greeting, "Even amid busy times, I vividly remember each moment when we carried cameras, capturing the same scenery from different angles, and shared our photos while having heartfelt conversations."
The photographic work "Tianshan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan, Tian Shan Mountains, Kyrgyzstan 2009" taken by the late Cho Yang-ho, former chairman of Hanjin Group. It is one of the exhibited works in this memorial photo exhibition. Cho, during his middle school years, developed a passion for photography after receiving a camera from his father, Cho Jung-hoon, the founder of Hanjin Group. Watching his father carry a camera and take photos inspired him to nurture his own dream of photography, and he was recognized for having an expert-level eye and skill. He referred to domestic and international photography magazines by scrapbooking them for his work and consulted with photography experts whenever possible to improve his skills.
He was known to always carry a camera even while working, viewing photography as both a hobby and a profession. His perspective on travel as an extension of work was also due to having a camera. Cho personally visited various overseas destinations, focusing on potential new routes, to assess their suitability for travel and route development. His impression of the Yangtze River area in China during a 2002 visit fits this context. At that time, Hanjin was aggressively expanding into various parts of China, and through the Yangtze River, he recognized China’s potential and understood the approach needed. Visiting lesser-known places such as Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, Istanbul in Turkey, and Huangshan in China, he identified their potential and developed them into air routes, which are representative examples.
Cho created calendars featuring his own photographs and gifted them to CEOs of foreign companies and diplomatic envoys in Korea, as well as acquaintances both domestic and abroad. From 2002 to 2019, except for one year, he personally took all the photos used in these calendars. In 2009, he published a photo book containing 124 representative works along with explanations. He also established the Ilwoo Photography Award named after his pen name in 2009, which continues to support promising photographers with competitive potential.
