Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters, Proactive Safety Management of Temperature-Sensitive Hazardous Material Facilities

Preparing for Summer Temperature Rise... Implemented in Prevention, Preparedness, and Response Stages

Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters, Proactive Safety Management of Temperature-Sensitive Hazardous Material Facilities

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] The Jeollabuk-do Fire Headquarters (Chief Choi Min-cheol) announced on the 7th that from this month until July, they will implement proactive safety management measures for temperature-sensitive hazardous material facilities in preparation for the summer temperature rise.

According to the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters, an explosion accident occurred last month on the 19th at a hazardous material manufacturing plant located in the national industrial complex in Ulsan, resulting in about 10 casualties.

Additionally, on the 22nd of last month, an explosion of Class 5 hazardous materials at a chemical factory in Wanju-gun caused property damage worth about 14 million won, and on the 30th, an explosion of a hazardous material tank at a chemical factory in Gunsan caused property damage worth 40 million won, with hazardous material accidents occurring one after another.

In response, the Jeonbuk Fire Headquarters will implement disaster response safety measures at each stage?prevention, preparation, and response?targeting a total of 206 hazardous material facilities, including 161 hazardous material manufacturing plants and 45 temperature-sensitive Class 5 hazardous material workplaces across the province, to proactively prevent accidents caused by rising temperatures.

First, as preventive measures, they will conduct ▲fire inspections at 206 hazardous material facilities ▲share accident cases and provide on-site consulting visits ▲send preventive measure guidance notices.

For the preparation stage, measures include ▲joint drills with related organizations such as the Chemical Structure Center ▲on-site practical training and creation of practical guides for hazardous materials ▲coaching services for safety managers. For the response stage, measures include ▲mobilizing dominant firefighting forces in the early stages of disasters ▲joint response with organizations such as the Chemical Safety Agency ▲operating a hazardous material accident investigation committee to analyze causes of hazardous material accidents and prepare recurrence prevention measures.

Chief Choi Min-cheol of the Fire Headquarters said, “Protecting residents safely from hazardous materials with a very high risk of fire and explosion is the mission of Jeonbuk Fire. We will focus on safety management of temperature-sensitive hazardous material facilities in preparation for the summer temperature rise.”

Meanwhile, Class 5 hazardous materials mostly consist of self-reactive substances containing oxygen, which have very fast combustion rates, are prone to explosion due to heating, impact, or friction, and are sensitive to temperature and climate, requiring special maintenance and management.
