'World Developer Conference (WWDC) 2022' Held
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] From now on, Apple iPhone users will be able to customize their lock screens.
On the 6th (local time), Apple unveiled the operating system (OS) 'iOS 16' with improved lock screen, sharing, and communication features at its annual developer conference, the 'Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2022.'
Customizable Lock Screen with Widgets and Real-Time Status Features Added
For the lock screen, a new multi-layer effect has been applied, allowing the subject of a photo to be placed in front of the time on the lock screen. Users can also change the style and color of the date and time themselves. Widgets can now be used on the lock screen as well. This makes it easy to check various information at a glance, such as scheduled calendar events, weather, battery level, alarms, time zones, and activity ring progress. Users can also create lock screens by combining their preferred emojis and colors.
A real-time status feature has been added so that live events such as sports games, workouts, ride-sharing, or food delivery orders can be immediately recognized from the lock screen. Focus mode is linked with the lock screen, allowing the lock screen wallpaper and widgets to be connected to a specific focus mode. To activate focus mode, users simply swipe to the corresponding lock screen. Using focus mode filters, only content related to the user’s focus mode can be displayed in applications such as Calendar, Messages, and the Safari web browser.
Store and Share Family Photos in One Place
iOS 16 also introduces the 'iCloud Shared Photo Library,' which allows family photos to be stored and shared in one place, as well as a new Messages app that lets users edit recently sent messages or cancel sending.
The iCloud Shared Photo Library is a separate library that up to six users can jointly participate in and enjoy. Users can share existing photos from their personal photo libraries or set specific photos to share based on start date or people in the photos. A newly introduced toggle in the Camera app allows photos to be automatically sent to the shared library. Additionally, an intelligent feature suggests sharing photos that include people participating in the shared library. All users participating in the shared photo library can add, delete, edit, and favorite preferred shared photos or videos. Email sending can be scheduled, and there is also a time window to cancel sending before the email reaches the recipient’s inbox.
The 'Live Text' feature, which recognizes text in images, now supports videos as well. The 'Visual Lookup' feature introduces a new function where users can tap and hold on a subject in an image, lift it from the background, and move it to apps like Messages.
Interest-Free Installment Program and Next-Generation CarPlay Unveiled
Apple improved the Wallet app and introduced 'Apple Pay Later,' an interest-free installment program in the U.S. that allows users to split Apple Pay purchases into four payments over six weeks. The next-generation CarPlay will not only allow direct control of the radio and adjustment of heating, cooling, and ventilation but will also use vehicle data to naturally render speed, fuel level, temperature, and more on the dashboard. CarPlay-supported vehicle models are expected to be announced by the end of next year.
Raymond Fedoryk, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, stated, "iOS 16 is a major update that revolutionizes the iPhone experience. This update encompasses the redesigned lock screen’s appearance and operation based on personalized and convenient features, the iCloud Shared Photo Library introduced for family members, the streamlined Messages and Mail apps, and the updated Live Text and Visual Lookup features enhanced with improved intelligence."
