[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has prepared a comprehensive heatwave countermeasure plan to systematically protect residents as the number of heatwave days is expected to increase due to the rise in average summer temperatures.

The period is until September 30.

The district has formed and operates a heatwave situation management task force consisting of three teams: the Situation General Control Team, Health Management Support Team, and Welfare Countermeasure Team. In addition, during heatwave warnings, a comprehensive heatwave countermeasure support situation room will be operated.

As heatwave mitigation facilities, 95 shade shelters are operated, and one cooling fog facility, which lowers surrounding temperatures and reduces fine dust, is in operation.

In early June, shade shelters will be installed at nine crosswalks with heavy pedestrian traffic, and an additional cooling fog will be installed at Yongma Waterfall Park.

To alleviate the intensifying urban heat island phenomenon, road watering operations will be conducted mainly on major arterial roads during heatwaves, and urban water facilities such as ground fountains and artificial waterfalls will be operated to cool down the heat.

At outdoor heat relief shelters such as parks and along the Jungnang Stream, Jungnang Ongdalsaem, a bottled water refrigerator, will be operated. It is scheduled to operate between July and August, when the heatwave is most severe.

A total of 139 heat relief shelters have been opened where residents vulnerable to heat can escape the heat. The district has installed heat relief shelters at the district office, 16 community centers, the district sports center, 115 senior centers, and six welfare centers.

For elderly residents in vulnerable housing suffering from tropical nights, seven local lodging facilities have been utilized to provide safe heatwave accommodations. These offer convenience for nighttime rest and sound sleep to avoid the heat. They can be used from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next day during heatwave warnings from July to August.

Additionally, to protect homeless people on the streets and in facilities, street counseling and emergency rescue patrols are conducted. For elderly living alone, services such as welfare checks, delivery of lunch boxes and side dishes, monitoring of safety and health solution (IoT) devices, and visiting health care programs are operated to strengthen the safety of vulnerable groups.

Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, “We will carefully prepare for the early arrival of the heatwave compared to previous years, pay close attention to vulnerable groups, and do our best to protect residents’ safety during the hot summer. We ask residents to refrain from outdoor activities and going out during heatwave warnings and to take care of their health.”
