The European Union (EU) is reportedly set to sign a gas supply agreement soon with Israel and Egypt to reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas.
Oliver Varhelyi, EU Commissioner for Enlargement, said in an interview with Egypt's state daily Al-Ahram on the 4th (local time), "The EU will sign a tripartite agreement on gas supply with Israel and Egypt within days."
He explained that the agreement centers on natural gas produced in Israel being liquefied in Egypt and then supplied to Europe.
Commissioner Varhelyi added, "Through this agreement, (the EU and Egypt) will establish a completely different level of cooperation than before," and "Egypt will become a stable and long-term energy supplier to Europe."
The contract is expected to be finalized during EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit to Egypt scheduled in two weeks.
Egypt has been self-sufficient in natural gas since 2018 and exported 2 million tons of natural gas to the European continent last year. Israel produces natural gas from two offshore Mediterranean gas fields, Tamar and Leviathan, and supplies some of it to Egypt.
