[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] “The past four years have been the most passionate, truly valuable and precious time in my life so far, and the next four years will be a time of leap forward to repay with achievements and present the future of Gwanak. I will not lose my initial resolve and will work with a passionate heart.”

Park Jun-hee, the mayor of Gwanak-gu who succeeded in re-election for the 8th term following the 7th term of direct election, expressed gratitude to the staff who carried out their duties without disruption during the election period through a morning broadcast, shared brief thoughts, and returned to work.

Immediately upon returning after two months, Mayor Park held a comprehensive report meeting on the COVID-19 related progress, visited the site of the recycling sorting center fire, and conducted an on-site inspection of disaster prevention facilities in preparation for flood and typhoon, marking his first steps after returning.

First, he presided over a COVID-19 quarantine status inspection meeting, checking the trend of confirmed cases in the area, vaccination status, operation of screening clinics, and progress in major departments.

Mayor Park said, “Although the Omicron variant is on the decline recently, the stage is still not safe due to the influx of new overseas variants and concerns about breakthrough infections after the third vaccination. We will not let our guard down and will continue to check sustainable quarantine and response systems in each sector for a complete return to daily life,” prioritizing the health and safety of residents.

He also visited the Sillim 2 Rainwater Pump Station to conduct an on-site inspection (photo) of pump operation and preparation status, as well as disaster prevention facility management, in preparation for heavy rain and typhoons. This was not just an emphasis on ‘safety’ in words but a direct visit to ensure residents’ safety.

Then, he revisited the Gwanak-gu recycling sorting center where a fire occurred on April 25, inspected the site, encouraged related staff, and checked the damage recovery status. Although there were no casualties from the fire, property damage occurred due to the destruction of recycling processing facilities and offices.

Mayor Park stated, “The district has secured additional costs for transporting all recyclable waste and will do its best to ensure smoother recycling operations such as collection, transfer, and transportation through prompt recovery and support.”

In the 8th direct election for the mayor of Seoul’s Gwanak-gu, Park Jun-hee, running as the Democratic Party candidate, won with 52.93% of the vote, defeating Lee Haeng-ja of the People Power Party who received 47.06%, maintaining the pride of the incumbent mayor.

Mayor Park said, “During the election period, meeting many residents on site was a precious time to realize again what the residents need and to make a resolution,” emphasizing that “accident prevention to protect the lives and safety of residents must be the highest priority above all else.”

He especially expressed gratitude to the residents who gave him another chance to work for Gwanak-gu with wise choice and trust, and declared his determination to work even harder on the front lines to meet residents’ expectations in the 8th term.
