Selected for Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy Public Project... Momentum Builds for Green Hydrogen Production Infrastructure Development
[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] Jeonbuk Province announced on the 2nd that it has been finally selected for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's 2022 "Establishment of Hydrogen Production Base Based on Water Electrolysis" project, promoted in cooperation with Buan-gun.
The project to establish a hydrogen production base based on water electrolysis aims to accelerate the transition to a clean hydrogen supply system by building a water electrolysis-based hydrogen production base (production, storage, and transportation facilities) capable of producing more than one ton of hydrogen per day.
The water electrolysis system is a facility that produces oxygen and hydrogen by decomposing water using electricity, and it is attracting attention as a core technology for producing green hydrogen with zero carbon dioxide emissions when using renewable energy power.
Jeonbuk Province applied for the project because it recognized the need for advanced research and demonstration through the establishment of small to medium-sized water electrolysis hydrogen production bases for the successful creation of a green hydrogen production cluster linked to the Saemangeum Renewable Energy Cluster and for attracting companies. Buan-gun also applied due to the urgent need to establish a production base to overcome the crisis of regional extinction and economic stagnation by providing opportunities for fostering new industries, expanding the spread of hydrogen vehicles, and increasing hydrogen demand due to the activation of fuel cell research (such as at the Energy Technology Institute).
Going forward, Jeonbuk Province and Buan-gun, together with Jeonbuk Technopark Foundation, Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., Techross Water & Energy Co., Ltd., Techross Environmental Services Co., Ltd., and SYF Co., Ltd., will invest a budget of 10.8 billion KRW (5.4 billion KRW national funds, 3 billion KRW local funds, and 2.4 billion KRW private funds) by 2024 to build a green hydrogen production base equipped with water electrolysis facilities and shipping facilities within the Buan New Renewable Energy Complex.
Accordingly, it is expected that a foundation will be laid for creating a green hydrogen full-cycle industrial ecosystem by supplying affordable eco-friendly hydrogen not only to the Buan area but also to hydrogen charging stations in the western region of Jeonbuk, thereby contributing to air quality improvement and carbon neutrality.
