Samsung Electronics-Naver Cloud Collaborate to Commercialize Korea's First 'Ieum 5G'
Service Launch Using Samsung Electronics Equipment at Naver New Headquarters
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Samsung Electronics and Naver Cloud have launched the world’s first autonomous driving robot service based on I-eum 5G (5G specialized network) and cloud at Naver’s second office building, '1784'. 'I-eum 5G' is a communication network that allows general companies, not mobile carriers, to directly build 5G networks using 5G frequencies (4.7GHz·28GHz). '1784' is the first tech convergence building in Korea to introduce I-eum 5G.
According to both companies on the 2nd, Naver’s 5G brainless robot technology utilizes the ultra-low latency characteristics of 5G communication to enable the cloud to act as the robot’s brain. The cloud connected to I-eum 5G serves as the robot’s brain, simultaneously exchanging information with dozens to hundreds of robots and controlling autonomous driving routes in ultra-low latency and real-time. Based on this, the robot Rookie provides convenience services such as parcel and coffee delivery to employees at '1784'.
Samsung Electronics’ dedicated I-eum 5G base station radio and compact core communication equipment installed at '1784' play a key role as a neural network connecting communication between the robots and the cloud. The compact core is a dedicated core for I-eum 5G, embedding major core functions in a compact product, making it easy for general companies to install and operate the network.
Samsung Electronics has specialized in companies requiring large data uploads by expanding the upload frequency ratio of I-eum 5G dedicated equipment to about twice that of general communication networks (approximately 20%), enabling the handling of data uploads from a large number of robots at once.
Previously, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for business cooperation on I-eum 5G and cloud solutions, and recently applied Samsung Electronics’ I-eum 5G dedicated equipment to '1784' and completed the licensing procedures for establishing a wireless station. '1784' will serve as a 'testbed' continuously executing innovative services that integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robots, and autonomous driving.
Both companies plan to continuously develop business models based on I-eum 5G and cloud, actively discover use cases, and mutually cooperate to contribute to the activation of domestic and international 5G specialized network businesses and ecosystem expansion. Following the I-eum 5G service at '1784', they will also collaborate at the new data center 'Gak Sejong' scheduled to be built in Sejong City next year. In addition, discussions are underway with companies in various industries such as manufacturing, logistics, ports, and healthcare for the introduction of I-eum 5G.
Jang Yong, Executive Director of Samsung Electronics Network Business Division B2B Group, said, "This cooperation with Naver goes beyond being Korea’s first I-eum 5G case; it is the first example where the vision and technological capabilities of both companies in 5G, robots, and cloud have combined to create various synergies." He added, "Samsung Electronics will continue to build 5G specialized network ecosystems domestically and internationally and create 5G specialized network business cases in various fields such as transportation, hospitals, schools, factories, and SOC facilities."
Han Sang-young, Executive Director of Naver Cloud Strategy & Planning, said, "'1784' is a building where Naver’s advanced technologies converge and serves as a testbed for future technologies, centrally using 5G-based cloud." He added, "We will continue to cooperate with Samsung Electronics to expand I-eum 5G and enable more companies to achieve digital innovation based on the cloud."
