[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the day before the June 1 local elections, Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party candidate running for the Incheon Gyeyang-eul by-election, said on the 31st, "Please give me the opportunity to work so I can prove my ability."
Regarding the ruling party's offensive over the pledge to relocate Gimpo Airport, he criticized, "They are creating fake news that taking a plane from Gimpo boosts tourism in Jeju Island, but taking one from Incheon causes adverse effects," calling it "a national scam by preschool-age villains."
He said, "Politics is about doing what others don't do because of political interests," and urged, "Please judge the People Power Party by your votes, which treats policies done by me as policies but those done by others as scams." The candidate explained, "If you have ability, you give opportunities even to the children of slaves, like King Jeongjo who led Joseon's revival, and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, who achieved an unprecedented 24 victories in 24 naval battles in world naval history, because they were competent leaders."
He added, "The world can become hell or heaven depending on the capability and will of political leaders," and "If you elect competent and faithful workers, you can create a better world."
Candidate Lee also held focused campaigns with local candidates from Gyeyang-gu, putting all efforts into consolidating support in the final stage by emphasizing the 'regime check theory.' He said, "How big can the difference be between a political group that privatizes power entrusted by the people for private gain and a group that invests (budget) for the people?" and urged, "Please vote for the competent Democratic Party candidates."
