Jung Won-oh, Candidate for Seongdong-gu Mayor, Announces '5 Consecutive Actions' Plan

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jeong Won-oh, candidate for Seongdong District Mayor (Democratic Party, incumbent), announced on the 31st the ‘5 Continuous Practices’ for the uninterrupted development of Seongdong.

Candidate Jeong revealed the results of resolving long-standing issues in education, economy, transportation, safety, and administration completed during his tenure as Seongdong District Mayor, as well as future plans, expressing expectations for a local election based on the region and focused on policies.

Earlier, on the 27th, Candidate Jeong emphasized a policy election by announcing over 360 pledges categorized by sector, target, and 17 neighborhoods, which were added and supplemented during about 30 days of election campaigning.

Jeong Won-oh’s ‘5 Continuous Practices’ consist of ▲continuing the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education-Seongdong District Office agreement to improve educational conditions ▲demolition of the Sampyo Remicon factory followed by the creation of a cultural tourism town ▲establishment of Wangsimni Station on the GTX-C line and development of Wangsimni Global Business Town ▲expansion of Jangteo-gil road in front of Kumho Station after 40 years with rapid promotion of the second phase and establishment of Kumho and Oksu as premium residential centers ▲strengthening of life-centered administration recognized as the nation’s top level in COVID-19 response.

In February 2022, Seongdong District was the first among Seoul’s 25 autonomous districts to sign an agreement with the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education to improve educational conditions. According to the agreement, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education and Seongdong District Office will ▲establish a new middle school in Wangsimni New Town ▲promote the establishment of a middle school in Kumho-dong ▲create appropriate-sized educational conditions through the integration of Seongsu-Gyeongil middle and high schools ▲work to resolve gender imbalance among high school students.

Since 2018, Seongdong District has been promoting a revolutionary improvement in the educational environment with the highest level of educational expense support in Seoul. Candidate Jeong Won-oh also announced a pledge to increase the education budget by 1 billion KRW annually to support various educational programs and improve facilities and spaces such as school playgrounds, libraries, and cafeterias, including the renovation of all old restrooms in elementary, middle, and high schools within Seongdong District, expanding the budget to 12 billion KRW by 2026.

Additionally, Candidate Jeong revealed plans to build a landmark cultural complex facility like an opera house by utilizing the site of the Sampyo Remicon factory, which began demolition after 44 years, along with idle land in Seoul Forest. The Sampyo Remicon factory demolition started in March 2022 following a four-party agreement signed in April 2017, which Candidate Jeong led through over 100 consultations among Seoul City, Sampyo Industry, and Hyundai Steel during his tenure as Seongdong District Mayor.

Candidate Jeong is recognized as the only party who has communicated extensively with administration, companies, and residents regarding the Sampyo Remicon site and is acknowledged as the most suitable person to devise plans for Seongdong in future negotiations.

After the confirmation of the establishment of Wangsimni Station on the GTX-C line in February 2022, Candidate Jeong began plans to develop Wangsimni as a new economic and administrative town in Seongdong District.

Accordingly, he plans to relocate the current district office and police station and develop a global business town on the site, while moving the district office and police station to the Sowol Art Hall site to create a new administrative town.

Furthermore, Candidate Jeong, who expanded Jangteo-gil road in front of Kumho Station for the first time in 40 years in March 2022 to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and ensure residents’ safety, announced plans to swiftly promote the second phase of the project and expand Kumho and Oksu areas into premium residential centers with enhanced education, medical, and commercial functions through the development of the new Geumho Station area, Geumnam Market, and Oksu Station area.

Candidate Jeong also stated, “Based on the COVID-19 response capabilities recognized as the nation’s top level, including being the first in Seoul to distribute masks to all residents and attracting Seoul’s first vaccination center, I will strengthen life-centered administration.”

Finally, Candidate Jeong expressed his determination to “continue the skills and achievements confirmed in education, Sampyo Remicon demolition, GTX-C line attraction, Jangteo-gil expansion in front of Kumho Station, and COVID-19 response,” and briefly shared his election campaign sentiment, saying, “I conducted a policy election guaranteeing voters’ right to know and a clean campaign without negativity.”
