[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] SK E&S will create a 'carbon-neutral forest' in the wildfire-affected areas of the East Coast as part of fulfilling the 'carbon-neutral promise' made with 3,000 visitors at the World Gas Conference (WGC).

On the 30th, SK E&S announced that it will donate 30 million won to the nonprofit organization 'Life Forest' to plant about 3,000 trees.

The donation was made as a follow-up project to WGC 2022, held from the 24th to the 27th at EXCO in Daegu. During the WGC, SK E&S ran the 'Green Promise' campaign, donating one tree for each visitor who participated at their booth to create a forest in the wildfire-affected areas. Approximately 3,000 people participated in the campaign over the four days.

Visitors participated in the donation campaign while viewing SK E&S’s business portfolio, including low-carbon liquefied natural gas (LNG), hydrogen, renewable energy, and energy solutions, at an exhibition booth themed 'Unique Solutions for Carbon Neutrality.' Visitors checked their annual carbon emissions on a large monitor and shared their commitment to environmental protection activities, such as using tumblers, on social media (SNS). For each visitor’s pledge, one tree was donated. The donated trees will be planted in wildfire-affected areas such as Uljin County in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Samcheok and Donghae cities in Gangwon-do to create a carbon-neutral forest.

On the same day, SK E&S and Life Forest signed a 'Sponsorship Agreement for Restoration of Wildfire-Affected Areas on the East Coast in 2022' at the Life Forest office in the Forest Center, Mapo-gu, Seoul. Through this agreement, the two organizations will cooperate to promote citizen-participation forest creation and restoration activities in wildfire-affected areas in Gyeongbuk and Gangwon. Life Forest plans to use SK E&S’s sponsorship to assess the forest ecology status of the wildfire-affected areas and conduct tree planting and forest care activities with citizens.

Goo Hyun-seo, head of SK E&S’s ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) division, said, "The carbon-neutral forest created through visitors’ participation is meaningful as it represents SK E&S’s small but collective effort toward carbon neutrality with citizens. SK E&S will continue to strive to present feasible carbon reduction solutions as a responsible energy company."
