[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] On the second day of early voting, the 28th, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, cast his early vote in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon, where the June 1 by-election for the National Assembly is being held. After voting, he said, "I came to Gyeyang to support the candidate facing the 'big shot endorser' Lee Jae-myung."
On that day, at the polling station set up at the Gyesan 2-dong Administrative Welfare Center in Gyeyang-gu in the morning, Lee said, "The nationwide interest is on how the baseless candidacy of Lee Jae-myung will be judged in this election."
Regarding the voter turnout on the previous day, which was the highest ever for local elections based on the first day of early voting, he said, "It is difficult to directly compare with the last election because early voting turnout tends to increase with growing awareness of the convenience of the system," adding, "I hope many residents come out to vote and express their opinions."
When asked about the high early voting rate in the Jeonnam region and the low rate in Daegu, he replied, "Many people in rural areas use the convenience of the early voting system, which allows voting regardless of their registered address," and added, "In urban areas like Daegu, polling stations are well organized by apartment complexes, so there is a tendency to prefer voting on the actual election day, so it is difficult to assign special meaning."
On the same day, Yoon Hyung-sun, the People Power Party candidate for the National Assembly in Incheon Gyeyang-eul, who visited the early voting station with Lee, said, "This election is not Yoon Hyung-sun versus Lee Jae-myung, but about protecting the pride of Gyeyang-gu and saving the Republic of Korea."
He continued, "The party leadership promised full support for the Gyeyang region and said they would 'drop a budget bomb,'" adding, "Local residents have begun to recognize that the ruling party's People Power Party candidate is someone who can work."
Meanwhile, Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party candidate, voted at the early voting station set up at the Gyesan 4-dong Administrative Welfare Center on the first day of early voting, the previous day.
