[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced on the 28th at midnight that the number of new COVID-19 cases increased by 14,398, bringing the total to 18,067,669.


The number of new cases was 2,186 fewer than the previous day (16,584). The newly reported cases on this day were the lowest in 18 weeks since January 22, when the Omicron wave began (7,003 cases). Compared to one week ago on the 21st (23,457 cases), it decreased by 9,059, and compared to two weeks ago on the 14th (29,576 cases), it dropped by 15,178, reducing to less than half.


From the 22nd, the daily new cases over one week were 19,289 → 9,971 → 26,342 → 23,946 → 18,816 → 16,584 → 14,398. The average daily number of cases was 18,478.


Among the new cases, 45 were imported from overseas, and the remaining 14,353 were locally transmitted cases. By region (including imported cases): Gyeonggi 3,255, Seoul 2,278, Gyeongbuk 1,065, Daegu 975, Gyeongnam 937, Busan 682, Incheon 637, Chungnam 624, Jeonbuk 584, Gangwon 570, Jeonnam 508, Gwangju 496, Chungbuk 488, Daejeon 467, Ulsan 433, Jeju 280, Sejong 114, Quarantine 5.


The number of critically ill patients decreased by 11 from the previous day (207) to 196, the lowest since July 19 last year (185). The number of COVID-19 deaths reported the previous day was 36, four fewer than the day before (40). By age group, 24 (66.67%) were aged 80 or older, 9 were in their 70s, 1 in their 60s, 1 in their 50s, and 1 in their 30s. The cumulative death toll is 24,139, and the cumulative COVID-19 fatality rate is 0.13%.
