[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Rinat Akhmetov, chairman of System Capital Management (SCM) and the richest person in Ukraine, stated that a factory in Mariupol was destroyed by Russian airstrikes, resulting in losses of approximately 25 trillion won, and announced plans to sue Russia.
On the 26th (local time), according to major foreign media, Chairman Akhmetov said in an interview with Ukrainian broadcasters, "We will definitely sue Russia and demand appropriate compensation for all losses and business damages." He owns mining and steel companies based in Mariupol.
When asked about the extent of the damage caused by Russian bombings, Akhmetov replied, "The replacement cost due to Russia's attacks is about 17 to 20 billion dollars (approximately 21.5 trillion to 25.3 trillion won)," adding, "The final amount will be determined through the lawsuit against Russia." He also said that he remained in Ukraine even after the Russian airstrikes, stating, "I believe in our country and in our victory."
Earlier last month, Chairman Akhmetov expressed his intention to help rebuild his homeland, which was destroyed by the Russian invasion after the ceasefire. At that time, he emphasized, "Mariupol is both a global tragedy and an example of heroic actions," and added, "My ambition is to return to Mariupol and establish new production plans so that our steel can compete in the global market as before."
