Ssak- Swept Up CU

Did You Know CU Convenience Store Is a Dessert Hotspot?

On a drowsy afternoon craving something sweet, stop by a CU convenience store. Why CU, you ask? Because after tasting the Yonsei Milk bread that recently went viral on SNS, I couldn’t help but exclaim “As expected!!!” Moreover, they offer at least five different flavors of rice cakes, giving you plenty of options. I also picked up a newly discovered JMT dessert. Shall we find out if CU convenience store is truly a dessert powerhouse right now? (To differentiate from typical cafe desserts, I excluded cakes and macarons.)

Chaltteok Skewer (Choco)

The chewy and soft rice cake is filled to the brim with chocolate syrup. Just by looking at its color, you can tell it’s rich chocolate, not light chocolate. Because of that, it’s sweet enough that you’ll want some white milk or coffee alongside. Even though it’s coated with unsweetened cocoa powder, it’s not enough to cause coughing, which is a plus. They say there are chocolate chips embedded, but they don’t stand out much, so keep that in mind.

※ Jeju Green Tea, Condensed Milk Strawberry, Berry Berry, Corn, Tiramisu, Black Sesame, Sweet Potato

Chaltteok (Strawberry)

As soon as you open the bag, the scent of dried strawberries wafts out, and when you take a bite of the rice cake, you can crunch on strawberry seeds. Although the image photo shows syrup inside, the actual product contains soft cream. It boasts an irresistible combination of strawberry, white bean paste, and white chocolate. Even when eaten chilled, it’s not hard at all and maintains a soft texture, making it a great snack for summer.

※ (Daedu brand products) Honey Butter, Mugwort Latte, Milk, Real Fresh Chocolate

Chewy Roll Cake (Plain)

Isn’t a roll cake supposed to have cream thinly spread between the rolled layers of cake? With the rise of Dojima rolls, the visual style has gradually changed. The cake is soft yet chewy, and although the abundant cream might seem a bit rich, it’s not greasy at all. It’s not overly sweet either, so you can enjoy it without coffee or milk. If left at room temperature, the cream melts quickly, making the cake soggy and greasy, so be sure to keep it refrigerated.

※ (Chamjoeun products) Peach, Melon, Choco, Green Tea, Strawberry, Pure Milk, Soy Milk

Real Plain & Choco Scones

As a bonus, I prepared this separately. Unlike the other desserts, you can find these in the snacks section, not the refrigerated zone. The editor, who used to think scones were dry and overpriced, was proven wrong by this product. From the very first bite, it was so soft that I questioned, “Is this really a scone?” and even double-checked the packaging. Compared to cafes, it’s much more affordable, comes in a large size about the size of a fist, and there’s no reason not to buy it. The plain scone contains chocolate chips, and the choco scone has white caramel, so try according to your preference. They’re good as is, but if you want a warm dessert, I recommend lightly heating them in an air fryer!

If there’s a product you want to try, you can pre-order it through the PocketCU app, so keep that in mind!
