[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Du-yeol] Professor Cho Se-hyun of Pukyong National University has published the maritime humanities research series "Modern Chinese Exploration of Maritime Countries - Diaries of Late Qing Envoys and Maritime Civilization."
The book reinterprets the historical experiences of the Self-Strengthening Movement and the late Qing reform era under the theme "How did Qing intellectuals understand Western and Japanese maritime civilizations?"
Professor Cho compiled the research conducted while working as a general researcher at the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) Project Group of the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences to publish this series.
In the first half of the book, Professor Cho focuses on European envoys dispatched by the Qing during the Self-Strengthening Movement period, summarizing the outlines of Western science, technology, and maritime civilization as depicted in their travelogues and diaries, and reveals the process by which the Chinese formed a new maritime perspective.
The latter half of the book centers on travelogues and diaries of Japanese envoys, inspection teams, and students studying abroad dispatched by the Qing before and after the First Sino-Japanese War, detailing the level of understanding of the maritime nation (海國) Japan and the Japanese navy, as well as the process of inspecting or studying Japanese maritime civilization in Japanese society.
