Despite Requests for Leniency from Children and Brother-in-Law, First Trial Sentence Remains Unchanged
A man in his 50s who became enraged after discovering his wife's affair and killed her was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the appellate court as well.
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Lee Gyehwa] A man in his 50s who killed his wife in a fit of rage after discovering her affair was sentenced to 10 years in prison again in the appellate court.
On the 24th, the Daejeon High Court Criminal Division 1-3 (Presiding Judge Lee Heung-joo) sentenced Mr. A (55), who was charged with murder, to 10 years in prison, the same as the first trial.
Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of strangling his wife, Mrs. B, to death in an open field in Gongju-si, Chungnam Province, in September last year. He had learned in June last year that his wife was having an affair with her workplace superior and demanded that she stop contacting him, but the investigation revealed that she continued to meet with him.
It was confirmed that Mr. A killed Mrs. B in a rage after she demanded a divorce and property division during an argument, as she had been secretly meeting her lover at a friend's house in Daejeon while deceiving him.
Immediately after the crime, Mr. A went to a nearby police station and surrendered himself. From the first trial to the appellate trial, three children and Mrs. B’s younger sibling submitted petitions for leniency.
The court stated the sentencing rationale, "Considering the submitted petitions and letters of remorse, the defendant appears to have been a devoted family man, but there are no factors that warrant reducing the sentence for murder. The damage cannot be restored, and other mitigating reasons were already considered in the first trial."
