[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] Gyeongsan City in Gyeongbuk has been finally selected for this year's Industrial Innovation Infrastructure Construction Project, announced by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
Gyeongsan City's "Resource Circulating Cellulose Nanofiber Material Industrialization Center Construction Project," a core material development project responding to carbon neutrality, was finally selected in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy's competition.
The Resource Circulating Cellulose Nanofiber Material Industrialization Center Construction Project materializes cellulose, a biomass resource that can replace existing petroleum-based plastics and chemical fibers, into nanofibers.
This project aims to promote the transition to a resource-circulating industrial structure by utilizing it as a key material across industries such as automotive, energy, electronics, and daily necessities, targeting eco-friendly and low-carbon throughout the entire industrial activity cycle (production, consumption, disposal, and reuse of raw materials).
Over five years starting this year, 22.4 billion KRW (10 billion KRW national funds, 12.4 billion KRW local funds) will be invested to build an industrialization center with a site area of 3,000㎡ and a total floor area of 2,500㎡ within the Gyeongsan 4 Industrial Complex.
Fifty-two types of research equipment, including cellulose nanofiber production and component equipment, reliability verification, and eco-friendly testing and certification equipment, will be established to support product commercialization technology, product reliability and eco-friendly certification, and to build a domestic and international industry-academia-research technology information exchange and cooperation network.
This project selection is expected to further boost the city's future growth engine and advanced materials industry.
Choi Young-jo, Mayor of Gyeongsan City, said, "With the additional selection of the cellulose nanofiber project, the city is expected to emerge as a mecca of future new materials industry."
