Gwangju Mayor Candidate Kang Ki-jung, Gwangsan-gu Growth Engines 'Autonomous Vehicles and Songjeong Station Area Development'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kang Gijeong, the Democratic Party candidate for mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, identified ‘autonomous vehicles’ and ‘Songjeong Station area development’ as growth engines for Gwangsan, Gwangju.

On the 23rd, Kang held a ‘Visiting Policy Picnic’ in front of Wondangsan Youth Culture House in Gwangsan-gu and announced the new economic map and policies for Gwangsan, Gwangju.

He plans to make Gwangsan-gu the hub for future mobility with autonomous vehicles and develop the Songjeong Station area into a complex transfer center to open the gateway to Honam.

First, to make Gwangsan-gu a city centered on autonomous vehicles, he promised to establish a mobility materials and components cluster and create a demonstration city for autonomous urban air mobility.

Kang said, “The global automobile market has declared carbon neutrality and the cessation of internal combustion engine vehicle production. The future of Gwangju and Gwangsan depends on how much they lead the future car market.”

He continued, “We must focus on developing processes to transform existing industries into future car industries by building an autonomous mobility demonstration testbed. We must establish the Songjeong Station area development and the Songjeong Station complex transfer center to build the Honam metropolitan transportation network and establish it as the gateway to Honam.”

He also pointed out, “The daily number of users at Songjeong Station reaches 17,000 on weekdays and 25,000 on weekends. Songjeong Station has established itself not only as the gateway to Gwangju but also as the gateway to Honam, but the station is narrow and lacks user convenience facilities.”

He added, “Although the commercial district renaissance project is underway according to Gwangsan-gu’s own plan, more investment is needed to build the Songjeong complex transfer center. The convergence complex and commercial district revitalization linked to Songjeong Station Market, Songjeong Station Investment Leading District, and the former Kumho Tire relocation site represent the new future of Gwangsan-gu.”

At the policy picnic, citizens participating in the open discussion raised issues such as ▲relieving overcrowded classes ▲long-distance commuting problems ▲establishment of a Southwest Medical Center ▲building transportation networks to improve accessibility around Songjeong and Sangmu areas ▲expansion of CCTV installation.

Kang said, “The mayor must become the control tower for education. If elected, I will form a public-private joint task force combining city and district offices, city and district council members, the education office, and citizens to solve education problems.”

He also emphasized, “Through this policy picnic, I was able to hear about the inconveniences citizens feel in daily life and the necessary policy directions. I will boldly and swiftly resolve major issues for the development of Gwangsan.”
