[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Shin Dong-ho] The schoolyards of Chipyeong Elementary School and Chipyeong Middle School, located in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, have been transformed into beautiful green spaces through the School Forest Creation Project.
According to Seo-gu on the 23rd, the School Forest Creation Project is aimed at fostering students' sensitivity to natural ecology and providing nature-friendly learning and play spaces.
The target sites for the school forest project are selected by Gwangju Metropolitan City, and Seo-gu recommends schools annually through a public contest.
This year, these two schools were selected and received a total project budget of 120 million KRW to carry out the project.
Through this project, previously neglected and barren areas such as blind spots on the playground and old rest shelters, which students rarely used, were transformed by planting flowers and fruit trees, creating a garden with various textures and colors along the walking paths, thereby securing green spaces.
Earlier, Seo-gu signed a business agreement with these schools in January to ensure smooth project implementation, and the completed school forests are expected to serve as green resting areas not only for students but also for local residents.
A Seo-gu official said, “We hope the school forests become regional green spaces that can instill ecological sensitivity in both students and local residents. We will continue to promote the School Forest Creation Project to expand green spaces in response to climate change and improve the educational environment.”
