[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Kim Hu-gon, the newly appointed Chief Prosecutor of the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office, expressed his determination upon his first day at work, saying, "The prosecution is currently going through a very difficult period," and added, "I will do my best to overcome these challenging times together with the staff."
On the 23rd, Kim made these remarks on his way to the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul. When asked about the recent atmosphere of division and conflict within the prosecution organization, he emphasized, "It is very important to work together and find ways to unite the entire organization as one."
Regarding the criticism that there was a concentration of the 'Yoon Seok-yeol faction' in the personnel reshuffle following the appointment of Minister of Justice Han Dong-hoon, he said, "This is not the right time to comment on this on my first day as Chief Prosecutor," but added, "I hope that when looking at the overall personnel appointments later, they will be fair."
Concerning the so-called 'Prosecution Reform' bill (검수완박), he stated, "There are evaluations that there are problems with both the content and the procedure," and said, "We will make demands to the National Assembly where necessary and come up with various good ideas together with the staff."
He continued, "The neutrality and independence of the prosecution are values that must be upheld as long as the prosecution exists," emphasizing, "These two values must always be at the core during the process of carrying out our duties."
