National Cancer Center and Samsung Seoul Hospital Collaborate to Strengthen Proton Therapy

[Asia Economy Reporter Chunhee Lee] The National Cancer Center and Samsung Seoul Hospital announced on the 23rd that they signed a mutual cooperation agreement on the 20th at the National Cancer Center in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province to strengthen proton therapy and research.


This agreement was established to solidify the cooperative system in the field of proton therapy and research between the two institutions performing proton therapy. Going forward, the two institutions plan to collaborate comprehensively in areas such as ▲establishing a standard data platform for proton therapy ▲joint research based on the standard data platform ▲exchange of personnel and information and building a cooperative network ▲holding joint symposiums. The National Cancer Center introduced the proton therapy machine for the first time in Korea in 2007 and has been performing proton therapy since then, while Samsung Seoul Hospital introduced the proton therapy machine in 2016 as the first private hospital and has been expanding proton therapy.


Um Hyun-seok, Director of the National Cancer Center Hospital, said, “Through this agreement between the National Cancer Center and Samsung Seoul Hospital, which are conducting cancer treatment using protons, we expect to expand cooperation in various fields such as establishing proton therapy standards and building a data platform,” adding, “The National Cancer Center will continue efforts for cancer treatment and cure by actively responding to the increasing demand for proton therapy and providing optimal proton therapy.”


Lee Woo-yong, Director of the Cancer Hospital at Samsung Seoul Hospital, said, “We are very pleased to have a cooperative relationship that can create synergy by combining the proton therapy and clinical research capabilities of both institutions,” and added, “We will do our best to take a step closer to truly overcoming cancer through a comprehensive and three-dimensional approach that considers not only treatment but also life after treatment.”
