[Asia Economy Reporter Hyungsoo Park] Information security specialist WINSS has been selected as the preferred negotiator for the Busan Eco Delta Smart City National Pilot City construction project. WINSS plans to be in charge of cybersecurity in the Busan Smart City project.
The "Busan Eco Delta Smart City National Pilot City" construction project is the largest smart city project in Korea, commissioned by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Water Resources Corporation. The total project scale is 5.4 trillion KRW, with a project period of 15 years, including 5 years of construction and 10 years of operation. The operation period will be extended every 5 years thereafter.
The project aims to create Korea's future-oriented smart city by concentrating major urban functions such as residential, commercial, R&D, energy, business, and culture on a site of approximately 840,000 pyeong (about 2.77 million square meters) in Gangseo-gu, Busan, which is similar in size to Yeouido, applying various advanced IT technologies.
The preferred negotiator, "The In (人) Consortium," led by LG CNS, was formed by gathering large, medium, and small companies in key industrial sectors necessary for smart city construction, including finance, construction, mobility, renewable energy, telecommunications, security, and healthcare. The consortium includes 12 companies such as LG CNS (lead company, smart services division), WINSS (cybersecurity division), Shinhan Bank (finance division), Hyundai Construction (construction division), and SK Ecoplant (energy division).
Cybersecurity, which WINSS is responsible for, was identified as an essential item for the stable operation of AI and big data-based intelligent smart city platforms and infrastructure. WINSS will proceed with the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of the security system and integrated control system within the smart city in consultation with LG CNS, the overall project manager.
A WINSS official said, "The importance of security inevitably increases in IT new technologies applied to smart city construction such as AI, autonomous driving, mobility, robots, and IoT. We see WINSS's role and responsibility as significant."
He added, "Based on over 20 years of accumulated information security technology and control know-how, we will strive to build and operate a smart city infrastructure that is safe from cyber threats."
