[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Nayeon] A bloodsucking fish that causes fatal injuries when entering the human body has become a source of fear. If it enters a person's body, immediate surgery is required.

According to Brazilian media 'Canal Tech' on the 21st, a small fish called Candiru is causing fear among residents.

The Candiru is a small fish measuring only 5 to 12 cm, but it has the habit of entering all kinds of openings. As a result, it can enter the human anus, vagina, and penis.

This fish is characterized by feeding on the blood of other fish and animals, and it can even parasitize the gills of other fish. It mainly lives in the Amazon River, with a small head and eyes and a soft body, making it difficult to recognize as a bloodsucking fish with the naked eye.

The Candiru is attracted to smells, blood, and decaying substances. If it penetrates the human body, it uses its spines and fins to make it difficult for the person to remove it. Once inside the body, it consumes from the inside out.

In the Rondonia region of Brazil, at least 10 cases of human body penetration are reported annually. Most cases occur in women who enter the river during menstruation to urinate.

So far, there have been two reported cases of fatal injuries caused by the Candiru. One man had the fish removed from his urethra through cleaning and endoscopy. One woman had her uterus scraped, eventually resulting in infertility.

To reduce damage caused by the Candiru, it is necessary to thoroughly protect the genitals and anus before entering the water. Also, if there are wounds, one should avoid entering the water.
