Police: "We Plan to Handle It According to Our Laws"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] One day before the South Korea-US summit, a US government employee who assaulted a South Korean citizen while intoxicated has been booked by the police.
On the 20th, the Yongsan Police Station in Seoul announced that they have booked and are investigating a man in his late 30s, Mr. A, an American belonging to the US Department of Homeland Security, on charges of assault.
According to the police, Mr. A is accused of hitting the neck of Mr. B, who was waiting for a taxi near the 'Grand Hyatt Seoul' hotel in Yongsan-gu, at around 4:20 a.m. the previous day.
At the time of the incident, Mr. A was intoxicated and reportedly got into an altercation with Mr. B, who was waiting for a taxi at the stand after getting off a taxi, and struck Mr. B's neck once with his hand.
The Hyatt Hotel is the accommodation where US President Joe Biden, visiting South Korea for the South Korea-US summit, will stay.
The US Department of Homeland Security is the department responsible for presidential security, and it is reported that Mr. A came to Korea due to President Biden's visit schedule.
The police stated, "The suspect was questioned today, and we plan to punish him according to our laws."
