[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Han Young-seok, Vice Chairman and CEO of Hyundai Heavy Industries, was recognized for his contributions to strengthening the quality competitiveness of the domestic shipbuilding industry.

On the 20th, Han received the Global Quality Management Executive Award at the '2022 Spring Academic Conference Quality Award Ceremony' held at The-K Hotel in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

The association presents this award to executives who have made significant contributions to the development of Korea's industry and quality management activities, as well as achievements in corporate social responsibility. Han joined the company in 1979 and has dedicated 43 years solely to shipbuilding. Since his appointment as CEO in November 2018, he has led quality innovation, playing a key role in helping the Korean shipbuilding industry overcome a prolonged slump and take a leap forward.

Han actively promoted quality management, including establishing quality policies, reducing quality failure costs to one-third of the level at the time of his appointment. He strategically planned and executed quality initiatives, significantly raising quality standards. Utilizing big data analysis, he worked to analyze the root causes of quality issues to prevent recurrence. He is also accelerating the establishment of smart shipyards based on digital technologies that reduce process delays and inventory.

Through quality exchange meetings among group shipbuilding affiliates such as Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, he expanded quality advancement measures across the entire group. He also contributed to fulfilling corporate social responsibility by promoting ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) culture, including drafting an environmental management declaration, obtaining the industry's first highest rating for green bonds, and strengthening eco-friendly ship technologies.

Han said, "I am pleased and honored to have my continuous efforts for quality innovation during a long recession recognized. I will continue to strive to enhance the overall competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry through ongoing quality improvements."
