Full-Scale Promotion of Future Car Workforce Development... Human Resources Development Committee Holds 1st Meeting

[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] The automotive industry is set to actively promote field-oriented customized workforce training based on the standardization of job competencies in the future car industry to respond to the structural transformation of the future car industry.

The Korea Automotive Technology Institute (KATECH), the representative organization of the Automotive Industry Human Resources Development Committee (Automotive ISC), held the '1st Steering Committee Meeting' on the 20th at the Vivace Hall of InterContinental Seoul COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

Automotive ISC was established in July last year by KATECH, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the Human Resources Development Service of Korea to support ▲identifying workforce demand in the future car sector ▲standardizing job competencies in the future car industry ▲field-oriented customized workforce training in response to the rapid transformation of the automotive industry.

The event was attended by Na Seung-sik, president of KATECH and chairman of Automotive ISC; Ryu Kyung-hee, director of the Vocational Competency Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Employment and Labor; Park Jae-young, manufacturing industry policy officer at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy; as well as Kim Dong-wook, vice president of Hyundai Motor Company; Jung Moo-young, executive director of Ssangyong Motor; Kim Ju-hong, head of the Policy Research Institute at the Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association; Kang Soon-geun, chairman of the Korea Automobile Specialized Repair Business Cooperative Federation; and Huh Geon-soo, professor at Hanyang University, among more than 40 key stakeholders from the private, public, and research sectors of the automotive industry.

Director Ryu, who attended the event, stated, “I hope Automotive ISC will play a significant role in solving the industry's pressing issue of field-customized workforce training by identifying workforce supply and demand by job and preparing the National Competency Standards (NCS) for the future car sector.”

Policy officer Park emphasized, “In the fierce global competition, to secure a competitive edge, it is essential to reform the human resources system to nurture core talents suitable for the future car sector. It is very encouraging that Automotive ISC has begun this discussion, and I expect it to serve as a milestone for cultivating talents essential to the industrial field.”

During the event, reports were presented on ▲the progress and mid-to-long-term plans of Automotive ISC projects ▲the 2022 Automotive ISC business plan.

First, since the launch of Automotive ISC, the status of participating organizations recruitment, the establishment of the 2022 business plan, and the progress of project implementation were reported, along with the announcement of mid-to-long-term plans envisioning a representative governance for future car human resources development.

Next, by highlighting the current status of future car workforce demand and the need to strengthen workforce support, the plans for Automotive ISC’s ▲core projects ▲autonomous planning projects ▲individual projects were shared. Through this event, it is expected that Automotive ISC’s full-scale activities will proactively reflect the demands of the future car market within the automotive industry and play an effective role in systematic human resources development and employment activation in related industries.

Chairman Na stated, “Taking the major transformation of the automotive industry as an opportunity, I hope to establish a sustainable human resources development system so that the automotive industry can leap forward to the next level. As the representative organization of Automotive ISC, we will do our best to improve the human resources development system to fit the future-oriented industrial structure through detailed analysis of core jobs and technical competencies and development of NCS.”
