Eighty-Year-Old Mother Who Told to "Stop Drinking" Assaulted... 60-Year-Old Alcoholic Given 2-Year Probation A man in his 60s, charged with assaulting his mother in her 80s, was sentenced to probation.

[Asia Economy Reporter Intern Lee Gyehwa] A man in his 60s who was charged with assaulting his mother in her 80s received a suspended sentence.

The Daegu District Court, 6th Criminal Division (Judge Kim Jaeho), announced on the 20th that it sentenced Mr. A (60), who was charged with assault causing injury to a family member, to 8 months in prison with a 2-year suspension.

Mr. A (60), who was hospitalized and receiving treatment for alcohol addiction symptoms, was charged with pushing his mother, Mrs. B (81), causing injury after she told him to stop drinking because he was intoxicated while drinking at home after leaving the hospital on October 21, 2020. Mrs. B, who fell after being pushed, hit her head on the leg of a dining table and was diagnosed with injuries requiring six weeks of treatment.

According to the verdict, Mr. A was being treated in a closed ward in Cheongdo-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, for alcohol addiction and alcohol dementia symptoms, and he asked his mother to help transfer him to a general ward. After moving to the general ward, starting from the 11th of the same month, he left the hospital daily to drink at his mother’s house in Yeongcheon-si, Gyeongbuk Province.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant has a history of multiple punishments for violent crimes, and the victim’s injuries are severe, but considering that the victim does not wish to press charges, we have taken these factors into account."
