[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunseok Yoo] General Motors (GM) announced on the 20th that Roberto Rempel, president of GM Technical Center Korea (GMTCK), has been appointed as the new president of GM Korea.


President Rempel will lead GM Korea starting from the 1st of next month. Current president Kaher Kazem will complete his term at the end of this month and take on the role of Executive Vice President at SAIC-GM, a joint venture between GM and Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) in China.


President Rempel joined GM Brazil in 1982. Since then, he has held various leadership roles in product planning and vehicle development across GM’s global operations. He has worked in Korea since 2015, successfully leading various new product development programs. In January 2019, he was appointed president of GMTCK, where he operated the R&D corporation as CEO, overseeing design, product engineering, and production technology divisions.


President Rempel stated, "It is a great honor to lead GM Korea at such an important time for both the automotive industry and the company," adding, "I hope that all employees, partners, and stakeholders will work together with one heart to enhance the future competitiveness of the Korean operations." He further said, "Building on a successful product portfolio based on a multi-brand strategy including Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, we will launch various global electric vehicles from GM in the future to establish a strong platform in the Korean market."

Meanwhile, Brian McMurray, Vice President of the GMTCK Technical Development Division, will assume the position of president of GMTCK starting from the 1st of next month, succeeding President Rempel.


Vice President McMurray joined GM in 1997. Since then, he has gained R&D experience at GM’s various global operations in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and China. In October 2019, he was appointed Vice President of GMI and GMTCK Technical Development Division.


Vice President McMurray emphasized, "I am very pleased to lead GMTCK," adding, "Together with the outstanding vehicle engineers and designers at GMTCK, one of the most competitive R&D corporations within GM, we will successfully carry out high-level development work and continuously innovate the work we do."
