[Yeonggwang=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jeonseong] Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 19th that it conducted publicity targeting residents and businesses using disposable cups ahead of the implementation of the actively introduced ‘Disposable Cup Deposit System’ starting from the 10th of next month.
The disposable cup deposit system is a system where a certain amount of deposit (300 won) is included in the price of a beverage when ordering drinks at coffee shops, etc., and the deposit is refunded when the used cup is returned.
The Ministry of Environment has implemented the deposit system to increase the collection rate of disposable cups and promote recycling, and it is expected to reduce greenhouse gases by more than 66% compared to incinerating cups without recycling.
The deposit applies nationwide at major coffee shops, fast food outlets, etc., and is applied to stores operated by businesses with more than 100 stores nationwide, such as Ediya, Twosome Place, Dunkin Donuts, Paris Baguette, Lotteria, Mom’s Touch, Gongcha, and Juicy, covering about 38,000 stores nationwide.
Consumers can return disposable cups with deposits at any store implementing the deposit system or equipped with a return system, and after scanning the barcode attached to the disposable cup, they receive a refund via app-based bank transfer or cash.
All these processes are managed through an online system operated by the ‘Resource Circulation Deposit Management Center.’
