[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters will fully activate the heatwave response system from the 20th of this month to September 30th to minimize damage to residents caused by heatwaves, as this summer's temperatures are expected to be higher than average.
According to the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters on the 19th, there have been 353 cases of heat-related illnesses in the province over the past five years (an average of 70 cases per year), occurring steadily each year. Last year, 39 patients were treated and transported through 119 emergency rescue activities related to heatwaves, and 31 cases of medical guidance and consultation were recorded.
The Jeju Fire Headquarters is establishing a 119 emergency rescue team dispatch system to prepare for heat-related illness cases and strengthening medical consultations for residents through medical guidance and emergency treatment at the Emergency Situation Management Center.
All 32 119 emergency rescue teams in the province are equipped with nine types of heatwave equipment, including ice vests, packs, and saline solution. They will also conduct pre-inspections of ambulance air conditioning performance and designate 28 pump ambulances as reserve dispatch teams to minimize response gaps by ensuring rapid dispatch when ambulances are unavailable.
Additionally, to enhance rapid and professional emergency treatment capabilities, special emergency treatment training for heat-related illness will be provided to emergency rescue personnel, and emergency medical consultation and guidance for emergency treatment before ambulance arrival at the scene will be strengthened at the 119 Comprehensive Situation Room and Emergency Situation Management Center.
To prevent heat-related illnesses among field personnel, safety management will be thoroughly implemented, including adjusting training times and providing heatwave supplies when heatwave warnings are issued.
A representative from the Jeju Fire Safety Headquarters stated, “When a heatwave warning is issued, outdoor activities should be minimized, and if outdoor activities are unavoidable, sufficient hydration and rest are necessary. If symptoms such as headache, convulsions, or decreased consciousness occur after outdoor activities, it is important to move to a cool place and promptly report to 119 to receive emergency treatment. Special caution is required.”
