[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Plant Association announced that it held the 'Outstanding Shipbuilding Talent Yard Camp Program' at Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (Ulsan) from the 10th to the 12th, and at Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries (Yeongam-gun, Jeollanam-do) from the 17th to the 19th. This is part of the 'Industry-Specific Human Resources Development Council (SC) Revitalization Support Project' supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology (KIAT). The SC is a private-led human resources development council established in 2005 under Article 12 of the Industrial Development Act, involving major industry organizations, companies, educational and training institutions, and specialized research institutes.
The program was mainly conducted for 2nd to 4th-year students majoring in shipbuilding and marine engineering at major universities nationwide. Students were selected from those recommended in advance through each department at the request of the Shipbuilding Association. Considering the preferred shipyards indicated during application, students were assigned to regions and shipyards and then received intensive training over three days and two nights. The program included a welcome speech and introduction by the Shipbuilding Association, presentations on the organization and business divisions of each shipyard, special lectures on the shipbuilding and marine industry market conditions, site tours, lectures by design experts, and explanations of recruitment information.
A representative from a local shipyard emphasized, "The Shipbuilding Association's efforts are more important than ever in timely securing future shipbuilding talent." An association official also said, "We could feel that students seriously contemplated their career decisions during the program." According to the association, the program was originally scheduled to be held in the second half of last year or in January to February this year. Despite being postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 80 students attended in Ulsan and Yeongam.
