On the 18th, Kim Kyung-ho, the People Power Party candidate for Gwangjin District Mayor, along with Kang Maeng-hoon from Seongdong and Seo Kang-seok, the Songpa District Mayor candidate, delivered a petition to Mayor candidate Oh Se-hoon to promote the underground construction of the aboveground section of Subway Line 2.
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] The underground conversion of the above-ground section of Seoul Subway Line 2, which runs through Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu, and Songpa-gu, is expected to be actively pursued.
In particular, Gwangjin-gu has actively requested the Seoul Metropolitan Government since the 5th term of the local government due to the lack of regional development caused by the above-ground section running through Seongsu-dong in Seongdong-gu, Konkuk University Station, and Gwangjin-gu Office Station.
However, Seoul City had been reluctant to proceed citing budget and other reasons.
Nevertheless, Oh Se-hoon, the Mayor of Seoul who ran twice for the National Assembly in Gwangjin-eul, along with Kim Kyung-ho, the People Power Party candidate for Gwangjin-gu Office, Kang Maeng-hoon, the candidate for Seongdong-gu Office, and Seo Kang-seok, the candidate for Songpa-gu Office, has intensively raised this issue.
In particular, Mayor Oh received a petition for the underground conversion of the above-ground section of Subway Line 2 from People Power Party candidates Kang Maeng-hoon for Seongdong-gu Office, Kim Kyung-ho for Gwangjin-gu Office, and Seo Kang-seok for Songpa-gu Office.
On the 18th, Kim Kyung-ho, the People Power Party candidate for Gwangjin-gu Office, along with Kang Maeng-hoon and Seo Kang-seok, delivered the petition for the underground conversion of the above-ground section of Subway Line 2 to Oh Se-hoon, the Seoul mayoral candidate who visited their campaign office for encouragement.
At this event, not only the three People Power Party candidates running for the three district offices in the June 1 election but also candidates for city and district councilors attended, actively urging for the prompt advancement of this long-standing citizen demand.
Prior to this, the three People Power Party district office candidates signed an M.O.U. to closely cooperate with Seoul City to establish a fund for the underground conversion of Subway Line 2 and to promote the undergrounding project.
Upon receiving the petition, candidate Oh Se-hoon said, "This was also my pledge two years ago," promising that if elected mayor, he would actively push forward the project in cooperation with the district office heads of the above-ground section. He then moved to the rooftop of the campaign office building to directly inspect the noise conditions of the above-ground section, where trains run at one-minute intervals.
Subway Line 2 opened in 1980, but due to technical issues at the time, the 10.42 km section from Hanyang University Station to Jamsil Station was constructed as an above-ground section. The noise pollution caused by this is unbearable for citizens, and it severely detracts from the urban landscape and hinders regional development. The underground conversion of this above-ground section has been a long-standing wish of the citizens.
MOU for Establishing a Fund for the Underground Conversion of Subway Line 2
The People Power Party candidates for the district offices of Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu, and Songpa-gu, through which the above-ground section of Subway Line 2 passes, have agreed to establish a fund for the underground conversion of the above-ground section and to closely cooperate with Seoul City for the undergrounding project.
Details regarding the fundraising will be discussed in future working-level meetings to devise an implementation plan.

Petition for the Underground Conversion of the Above-Ground Section of Subway Line 2
Subway Line 2 opened in 1980, but due to technical issues at the time, the 10.42 km section from Hanyang University Station to Jamsil Station was constructed as an above-ground section.
The above-ground section passing through the city center causes noise pollution that is unbearable for citizens, severely detracts from the urban landscape, and acts as a major obstacle to regional development. The underground conversion of this above-ground section has become a long-standing wish of citizens living in the areas through which the above-ground subway passes.
Now, with advancements in modern underground construction methods and the economic benefits of underground development, the necessity of underground conversion has been established both technically and economically. Therefore, the People Power Party candidates for the district offices of Seongdong-gu, Gwangjin-gu, and Songpa-gu, through which the above-ground section passes, have signed an MOU to establish a fund for the underground conversion of Subway Line 2 and earnestly request Mayor Oh Se-hoon to ensure the firm promotion of the underground conversion of the above-ground section of Subway Line 2.
