[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kang Gijeong, the Democratic Party candidate for mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City, and the party leadership have joined hands to accelerate the ‘relocation of Gwangju Military Airport.’
On the 18th, candidate Kang, Emergency Response Committee Chairman Yoon Hojung, Floor Leader Park Honggeun, and others promised to resolve the military airport relocation issue through a special law at the 3rd Central Election Countermeasures Committee meeting held at Kangchu Camp.
Chairman Yoon said, “We will hasten to prepare a stepping stone for Gwangju’s new leap forward and the Democratic Party will take the lead in the win-win development of Gwangju and Jeonnam. In particular, we will discuss the core issue of relocating Gwangju Military Airport with the government through the National Assembly and speed up the bill’s passage.”
Floor Leader Park stated, “We will firmly support regional development pledges and budgets. We will resolve the military airport relocation issue, the region’s biggest long-cherished project. We will enact and revise the Special Act on Military Airport Relocation and create a prosperous city of Gwangju through an AI-specialized complex.”
Additionally, they promised to enshrine the spirit of the May 18 Democratic Movement in the preamble of the Constitution.
Chairman Yoon emphasized, “Truth verification and succession of the Gwangju spirit transcend political factions and are the responsibility of all of us living in the present. We will expedite the process of engraving it into the Constitution as much as possible. In the second half of the year, we will form a Constitutional Amendment and Political Reform Special Committee during the National Assembly organization and immediately begin discussions on amendments.”
Candidate Kang said, “After promising to create a semiconductor-specialized complex and a cooperative special committee for military airport relocation with Jeonnam Governor candidate Kim Youngrok, following Standing Committee Chairman Lee Jae-myung, the party leadership has also stepped up to solve the military airport relocation issue and enshrine the May 18 spirit in the Constitution. Gwangju and Jeonnam will create a wind of victory with this strength. We will join hands with the Democratic Party and boldly and swiftly open a new era for Gwangju.”
