Held in connection with the “2022 Spring Royal Culture Festival,” this royal palace music concert features winning teams from JTBC’s traditional Korean music competition program “Pungnyudaejang,” delivering the melodies of our heritage. “Pungnyudaejang” is a traditional Korean music competition program that introduced the charm and appeal of gugak (traditional Korean music) to viewers through the fusion of gugak and popular music. More than 50 gugak artists appeared, showcasing original stages and lively performances that promoted gugak worldwide.
The event will be hosted by Choi Jaegu, who ranked 10th in the final round of “Pungnyudaejang,” and will feature a variety of performances by gugak artists. On the 21st, “AUX,” which presents a unique harmony of Western instruments and traditional Korean rhythms, and the gugak ensemble “Haeum” will perform. AUX, a team that reached the final round of “Pungnyudaejang,” will perform “Namwon Ganeun Gil,” “Kkaturi,” and “Sarangga.” Haeum, which advanced to the fourth round, will showcase the charm of gugak with pieces such as “Yeochang Gagok Pyeongnong,” “For Hesitant Lovers,” and “Daehan-i Salatda.”
On the 22nd, the final champion team of “Pungnyudaejang,” “Seodo Band,” will perform. Seodo Band, which won the Grand Prize at the 2019 KBS New Gugak Artist Awards and the Grand Prize at the 11th Korea University Gugak Festival in 2019, will present “Arirang of Hope,” “Boat Song,” and “Ganggangsullae,” delivering new pleasures of gugak.
The gugak team “Isang,” known for energizing audiences with samulnori (traditional Korean percussion quartet), also reached the final round of “Pungnyudaejang” and will captivate the audience with “Pride,” “Daltaryeong Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,” and “Aekmaek Itaryeong.” Lastly, Choi Jaegu, who won the Grand Prize in the Pansori Master Division at the 2021 Sejong National Gugak Competition for Unification (Minister of Unification Award) and is also the host, will add excitement to both days of the concert with the song “Sari Chaonda.”
