Fostering an Income-Guaranteed Oyster Farming Industry Accessible to All Ages and Genders
[Sinan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Jae-kyung] On the 12th, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do, successfully held the entrance ceremony for the 3rd term of the 2022 academic year ‘1004gul’ Aquaculture School, attended by 40 new students and about 100 related officials.
During this recruitment of new students, about 120 applicants, including residents with various occupations such as farmers and office workers, as well as applicants from other regions, applied, showing increasing interest every year.
Individual oyster aquaculture requires less labor intensity compared to other aquaculture species and has a high aquaculture income rate, allowing people of all ages and genders to participate. It was selected diversely, including women, multicultural families, full-time farmers and fishermen, and returnees to fishing villages, as a stable income-based aquaculture industry that can be passed down through generations.
The ‘1004gul’ Aquaculture School is structured as a learner-centered, field-oriented practical curriculum covering the entire process from seed production, main cultivation, to distribution and sales of individual oysters.
Over the next six months, the program will proceed with systematic theory and field training, as well as valuable programs such as tours of Sinan-gun’s individual oyster farms to enhance the efficiency of education.
Additionally, the county has established a cooperative system among related ministries and affiliated organizations to support early settlement of trainees by providing aquaculture facility support, securing aquaculture farm licenses, joining the Fisheries Cooperative and Fishing Village Associations, and supporting aquaculture equipment.
A Sinan-gun official said, “In line with the economic revitalization following the recent lifting of social distancing, we express our gratitude to the new students who are challenging and researching a new aquaculture species called individual oysters, and we will strive to make Sinan-gun a place where everyone prospers together and a mecca for advanced individual oyster aquaculture industrialization.”
