[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is gathering on-site opinions to protect designs in the metaverse field.
KIPO announced that on the 18th, it will hold the first meeting of the 'Metaverse Design Expert Council' at the Korea Institute of Design Promotion located in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do.
The meeting is held to collect on-site opinions to prepare institutional improvement plans for protecting metaverse designs. The council consists of metaverse design practitioners, metaverse platform providers and users, legal and academic experts.
At the meeting, KIPO will first present the current status of digital design protection under the Design Protection Act and key cases regarding metaverse design rights.
Then, experts from various fields who are members of the council will share their opinions and have a discussion session.
The council will form subcommittees by expert fields and hold three meetings. In addition, KIPO will continue cooperation in various fields such as metaverse-related education and seminars.
Mok Seong-ho, Director of the Trademark and Design Examination Bureau at KIPO, said, “Through the operation of the Metaverse Design Expert Council, we will collect opinions from field experts and promote amendments to the Design Protection Act in line with the digital transformation era.”
