[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] On the 16th, Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam Province, held a traditional coming-of-age ceremony for 50 students of Gyeongnam Provincial Geochang College in the front yard of Myeongnyundang at Geochang Hyanggyo, hosted by the Seonggyungwan Youth Confucian Association Geochang Branch, with Confucian scholars and related personnel attending.
The traditional coming-of-age ceremony is an event celebrating "Coming-of-Age Day" for students turning 19 years old this year. It is held annually under the auspices of the Seonggyungwan Youth Confucian Association Geochang Branch to instill a sense of responsibility and pride as adults. The event was canceled due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic after 2019 and was held again after three years.
This coming-of-age ceremony proceeded in order, starting with the Sanggyeonrye, a formal greeting to the honored guest who presides over the ceremony, followed by Samgarye, Chorye, and the Coming-of-Age Declaration, where the honored guest declares that the coming-of-age person has become a full adult.
Park Jeong-je, Jeongyo of Geochang Hyanggyo, said, "The coming-of-age ceremony is the first gateway among the four rites of passage in a person's life?coming of age, marriage, funeral, and ancestral rites?and I hope it becomes an opportunity to correct the body and mind as an adult and to awaken responsibility and duty."
Kim Tae-hee, Acting Governor of Geochang County, encouraged, "Congratulations on becoming an adult. Always consider yourself the most precious person, set greater goals, and I support you to learn a lot and grow to achieve those goals."
