[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] The group BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) achieved a triple crown at the '2022 Billboard Music Awards' (BBMA). With wins in three categories, BTS set a record of winning for six consecutive years.

On the 15th (local time), the American music media Billboard announced the list of winners for the '2022 Billboard Music Awards' in advance. BTS won in three categories: 'Top Duo/Group,' 'Top Song Sales Artist,' and 'Top Selling Song.'

For the Top Selling Song category, two songs, 'Butter' and 'Permission to Dance,' were nominated, showcasing BTS's influence. BTS received the honor with 'Butter.'

The Billboard Music Awards is considered one of the three major American popular music award ceremonies alongside the 'American Music Awards' (AMA) and the 'Grammy Awards.' While the Grammy Awards, where BTS previously did not win, highly reflect the musical evaluation of judges, and the American Music Awards use popular influence as an indicator, the Billboard Music Awards are characterized by selecting winners based on Billboard chart records.

This year, BTS was nominated in a total of six categories including 'Top Billboard Global Artist/Excl. U.S.,' 'Top Billboard Global Song/Excl. U.S.,' and 'Top Rock Song,' drawing attention to whether they would achieve the most wins in history.

Starting with the 'Top Social Artist' award in 2017, BTS won the 'Top Duo/Group' in 2019 and the 'Top Social Artist' category in 2020.

Last year, BTS won in all categories they were nominated for, including 'Top Selling Song,' 'Top Song Sales Artist,' 'Top Duo/Group,' and 'Top Social Artist,' achieving four awards. With this triple crown, BTS has achieved a record of winning at the Billboard Music Awards for six consecutive years.

The winners for the categories in which BTS was nominated were Ed Sheeran for 'Top Billboard Global Artist' (Excl. U.S.), The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber's 'Stay' for 'Top Billboard Global Song' (Excl. U.S.), and the band M?neskin for 'Top Rock Song.'

This year, the Billboard Music Awards will present awards in a total of 62 categories. Canadian R&B star The Weeknd led with 17 nominations, becoming the most nominated artist. American singer Doja Cat received 14 nominations, while Justin Bieber and Olivia Rodrigo were each nominated in 13 categories.

Meanwhile, BTS did not attend the Billboard Music Awards ceremony due to preparations for their new album. BTS's name was not included in the list of performers announced by Billboard. Korean-American K-pop singer AleXa, who won the NBC competition program 'American Song Contest,' is scheduled to attend the Billboard ceremony.
