Making Future High-Speed Trains with POSCO Steel ... POSCO Supplies to 'Nederlandse Hart B.V.'

PosLoop355, 1.7 Times Superior Vibration Absorption Compared to Standard Steel

Making Future High-Speed Trains with POSCO Steel ... POSCO Supplies to 'Nederlandse Hart B.V.' POSCO will supply the steel 'PosLoop 355' for hyperloop tubes to the European Hyperloop Center installed by the Dutch company HARDT.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yeo Jong-gu] POSCO will supply its hyperloop tube steel 'PosLoop355' to the Dutch company HARDT.

The hyperloop is a future eco-friendly transportation method that can operate magnetic levitation capsules at ultra-high speeds exceeding 1000 km/h inside large vacuum tubes.

PosLoop355 is a hot-rolled steel developed by POSCO in collaboration with Tata Steel Netherlands for hyperloop tubes, with 275 tons to be supplied from June this year until December next year.

HARDT in the Netherlands plans to use it for a 450-meter test section of the European Hyperloop Center located in Vinkdam, Groningen Province.

Since 2020, POSCO has participated in joint research with Tata Steel Netherlands on developing dedicated hyperloop steel and structural solutions for the Dutch national project HDP led by HARDT.

Additionally, after completing the development of PosLoop355 last October, POSCO plans to supply approximately 1,800 tons more for a 2.7 km test section by 2025, starting with this initial delivery.

The core technology of the hyperloop is securing the straightness and stability of the tube for ultra-high-speed travel, which requires the tube material to withstand vibrations and shocks generated during high-speed operation.

Steel is recognized as the most suitable material for hyperloop tubes due to its excellent airtightness and workability, which help maintain the internal pressure of the hyperloop at a vacuum state for a long time compared to other materials.

PosLoop355 developed by POSCO is evaluated to enhance hyperloop stability by having 1.7 times higher vibration absorption capacity and superior seismic performance compared to ordinary steel.

In particular, POSCO has secured differentiated technology by filing nine patents related to structural technologies, including specialized steel manufacturing methods for vacuum train tubes.

Of the initial 275 tons, POSCO plans to supply 63 tons to its customer SeAH Steel, which will directly roll 64 meters of 2.5-meter diameter tubes and then supply them locally in the Netherlands.

Kim Dae-up, Head of POSCO Hot Rolled Steel Marketing Division, said, “POSCO will collaborate with POSCO Europe, POSCO International, SeAH Steel, and others to mass-produce and supply specialized steel for the eco-friendly future transportation hyperloop, establishing itself as a global leader in the future eco-friendly mobility market.”

Starting with supplying steel for the European Hyperloop Center test line, POSCO plans to actively promote steel supply for hyperloop projects scheduled domestically and internationally.
