Annual evaluations lead to a total support of 1 billion KRW over 3 years
Operated as a regional hub for spreading Hanbok culture
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heeyoon] Hanbok culture creation centers will be established in Jeonju, Jeonbuk, and Sangju, Gyeongbuk to revitalize the hanbok cultural industry.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Craft & Design Foundation announced on the 12th that they have finally selected two local governments, Sangju in Gyeongbuk and Jeonju City, as sites for the 'Regional Hanbok Culture Creation Centers.'
The regional hanbok culture creation center project is being launched for the first time this year to support hanbok creative activities by establishing hanbok infrastructure based on local resources and to revitalize the hanbok cultural industry by operating community-linked programs.
The Ministry and the Foundation will collaborate with local governments, focusing on regions where hanbok technology or material industries are active, to support the local hanbok industry in gaining self-sustainability.
The selected local governments will receive up to 1 billion KRW annually for up to three years through evaluations. ▲In the first year, the establishment of hanbok culture creation center infrastructure (450 million KRW) ▲In the second year, operation of detailed programs (300 million KRW) ▲In the third year, strengthening of self-owned capabilities (250 million KRW) will be implemented step by step.
Additionally, during the project period, hanbok cultural education will be provided at about 50 elementary, middle, and high schools in the region.
Gyeongbuk Province plans to create the 'Sangju Sanguiwon' within the 'Hanbok Promotion Center' in Sangju, utilizing approximately 161 pyeong of space. Based on traditional textile industry facilities such as silk, hemp, and ramie, it will be reorganized into a comprehensive space supporting hanbok production, sales, and research and development, including a hanbok history and technology education center and a hanbok startup development center.
Jeonju City will convert about 266 pyeong of space within the 'Korean Traditional Culture Center' into a creation center. It plans to utilize local resources such as the nearby Jeonju Hanok Village, 'Wedding Street,' and traditional markets. Specialized programs centered on hanbok professionals and citizens will be operated, and a hanbok enjoyment space will be established to develop into a hub for coexistence in the hanbok commercial district and the spread of hanbok culture.
A Ministry of Culture official said, "We will create a foundation for the hanbok cultural industry to develop by producing new hanbok cultural content and establishing a base for enjoyment starting from the regional hanbok culture creation centers," adding, "We hope that hanbok culture creation centers will take root throughout the regions and blossom hanbok culture nationwide."
