[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Kakao Entertainment announced on the 12th that it will produce and present Marvel Comics as webtoons, following DC Comics.
Kakao Entertainment will consecutively release seven Marvel Comics webtoon works, starting with 'Doctor Strange,' which was recently released as a movie. Previously, starting with 'Batman' in April last year, they introduced a total of five DC Comics works including 'Justice League,' 'Wonder Woman,' 'Superman,' and 'Harley Quinn.' This was the first case in Korea where DC Comics works, previously supplied as comic books, were produced and presented as webtoons. This year, in collaboration with Sigongsa, the official Marvel Comics distributor in Korea, they will supply seven works that expand not only the DC Comics universe but also the Marvel Comics universe.
The first webtoon to be released is 'Doctor Strange,' which deals with the narrative following the movie 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.' It adapts Jason Aaron's popular Marvel Comics into a webtoon, depicting Doctor Strange before he knew magic and the process of how he became the Sorcerer Supreme.
On the 20th, they will release 'Thor,' a series based on the comics that inspired the movie 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' set to premiere in July this year. In June, works such as 'Ms. Marvel,' which is scheduled to air on Disney Plus, along with 'Hawkeye,' 'Moon Knight,' and 'Vision' will be released consecutively. In July, they will present 'Spider-Man: Miles Morales,' which is set to be released as the 2023 movie 'Spider-Man: New Universe 2.' This webtoon covers the origin of Miles Morales, who debuted as the second Spider-Man following the first Spider-Man, Peter Parker.
A Kakao Entertainment official stated, "Since these works have been newly reborn in webtoon format from comic books, they are expected to offer a fresh enjoyment to Marvel fans both domestically and internationally, and are anticipated to generate greater buzz in conjunction with the movie releases." They added, "It will be an enjoyable experience that expands the Marvel universe a bit more and helps fans understand it better by introducing various heroes such as Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight, who are still unfamiliar to domestic fans."
