People Power Party Gwangju Branch: "At Least One Winner Needed to Prevent Democratic Party's Dominance"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The People Power Party candidates have vowed to secure at least one seat in the Gwangju area, a stronghold of the Democratic Party of Korea.

On the 11th, the People Power Party Gwangju Metropolitan City Party held an election countermeasure committee meeting at the Kim Dae-jung Convention Center and held a certificate of nomination (candidate recommendation letter) awarding ceremony for candidates running in the local elections.

At the meeting, Kwon Seong-dong, the floor leader of the People Power Party, attended to encourage the candidates and personally handed over the certificates.

The Gwangju City Party candidates for the local elections include Joo Ki-hwan, candidate for Gwangju mayor, three candidates for basic local government heads (Yang Hyeryeong for Dong-gu district mayor, Kang Hyun-gu for Nam-gu district mayor, Kang Baek-ryong for Buk-gu district mayor), two proportional representation candidates for Gwangju city council (1st priority Kim Yong-im, 2nd priority Kim Sun-ok), two proportional representation candidates for Buk-gu council (1st priority Seon Jeong-hee, 2nd priority Choi Dong-hoon), and seven district council candidates (Dong-gu district A Park Jin-woo, Seo-gu district Dae Choi Hyun-soo, Nam-gu district B Jeong Hyun-ro, Buk-gu district C Jeong Seung-joo, Buk-gu district Dae Kwak Seung-yong, Buk-gu district Ba Jeon Soo-yeol, Gwangsan-gu district A Ryu Jae-cheon), totaling 15 candidates.

Floor leader Kwon said, “Today, we held the first party-government consultation since the new government’s inauguration,” adding, “It was decided to provide at least 6 million KRW per person to 3.7 million small business owners and self-employed people who suffered from COVID-19 business restrictions.”

He also said, “President Yoon is a politician who always keeps promises made to the people,” and “Since the president is strongly committed to fulfilling promises, the plan to provide 6 million KRW in quarantine support funds must be included in this supplementary budget.”

He continued, “If the Democratic Party holds all the mayor, district heads, city councilors, and district councilors, will proper checks and balances be possible?” emphasizing, “In this local election, our candidates and party members must work hard to secure at least one seat to prevent the Democratic Party’s monopoly in Gwangju.”

Kim Hyun-jang, the city party chairman, said, “We will strive to elect proportional representatives for metropolitan councilors and three young basic councilors,” adding, “We will do our best with party members to increase the party vote share and secure elected candidates.”

Meanwhile, the People Power Party Gwangju City Party candidates plan to apply for candidate registration with the election commission on the morning of the 12th and then pay respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery.
