Discussion on Electing the Chairperson and Forming the Working Committee

Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 11th that it plans to hold a meeting of the ‘5·18 Truth Investigation Gwangju Support Committee’ on the 13th to handle agenda items such as the election of the chairman.
Along with the election of the chairman, discussions will also cover the formation of the working committee, reports on the investigation activities of the 5·18 Truth Investigation Committee, and the support measures from Gwangju City for the investigation activities.
The working committee was formed with a total of seven members recommended from 5·18 organizations and civic groups.
It will handle practical tasks regarding assignments requested by the Investigation Committee and matters proposed by the Gwangju Support Committee. The specific scope of tasks and participation methods will be decided at upcoming working committee meetings.
The city will report on support measures for the investigation activities, including the establishment of support organizations and personnel support, operation of the Truth Investigation Reporting Center, and provision of basic data for each truth investigation task, and will seek active support and cooperation to ensure that the truth investigation activities proceed smoothly and efficiently.
It will also officially propose to the National Assembly a bill to extend the investigation period of the 5·18 Truth Investigation Committee for thorough truth verification of the 5·18 incident.
Jeong Shin, Director of 5·18 Commemoration, said, “This may be a crucial and precious last opportunity to thoroughly uncover the truth of the 5·18 history,” and added, “We ask for the interest and wisdom of citizens so that the history of 5·18 can be set right.”
