Gwangju Nam-gu's 'We are Green Nam-gu' Campaign Underway

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Jin-hyung] Gwangju Nam-gu community and Beautiful Store are launching the ‘We are Green Nam-gu’ campaign to spread an eco-friendly green movement through upcycling of used clothes.

Nam-gu announced on the 11th, “In collaboration with the Nam-gu Community Self-Support Center and Beautiful Store, we will carry out a green campaign until November to promote eco-life among local residents and raise awareness of the need to respond to the climate change crisis by sharing used clothes and producing zero-waste daily necessities.”

The ‘We are Green Nam-gu’ campaign is a project promoted by Beautiful Store to solve and prevent climate crisis issues. The Nam-gu Community Self-Support Center was selected for Beautiful Store’s ‘Beautiful Hope Sharing Support Project’ and is conducting the campaign together with Nam-gu.

The core of this campaign lies in used clothes.

The Nam-gu Community Self-Support Center plans to collect used clothes from local residents until September. Clothes collected from each household will be returned to the community under the donor’s name by November.

Wearable used clothes will be washed and mended to support low-income groups and social welfare facilities, and will also be donated to Beautiful Store.

Clothing that cannot be used will be upcycled into zero-waste daily necessities such as shopping bags and card wallets, which will be provided to children, adolescents, and vulnerable groups in the community.

The upcycling of used clothes will be handled by 15 self-support work groups and 3 self-support enterprises within the Nam-gu Community Self-Support Center.

Additionally, residents who participate in donating used clothes will receive zero-waste daily necessities produced by the self-support work group ‘Sup’, and institutions and organizations participating in the campaign will be supported with a ‘visiting experience program’ related to green practices.

A representative of the Nam-gu Community Self-Support Center stated, “Reusing clothing has the effect of planting 10,000 pine trees per ton, and donating secondhand clothes extends the lifespan of clothing by about 2 years, reducing carbon emissions and waste by up to 82%,” adding, “We will create a beautiful green Nam-gu through active participation of residents in the campaign.”
