Seoul City Analyzes Asset Status of Young Adults... Implements Customized Financial Planning Program

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 9th that it will launch a customized financial planning education program called ‘Seoul Youngtech One-Day School’ for young adults to analyze their asset status and establish financial goals. Starting on the 13th, the program will be held at Citizen Hall every second and fourth Friday evening at 7 PM until July.

On April 29, Seoul held a pilot program for ‘Seoul Youngtech One-Day School,’ and the enthusiasm was so high that 300 applicants applied for only 20 spots.

The education covers topics such as ‘Writing a Cash Flow Statement,’ ‘Drawing a Financial Position Statement,’ and ‘Setting Financial Goals and Alternatives.’ A Seoul Youngtech financial planner will directly provide lectures and practical support. Considering the nature of the hands-on training, the program is limited to around 20 participants to enhance educational effectiveness. Through this program, the city plans to help participants set financial goals tailored to their own cash flow and financial status.

Applications are accepted twice a month for both sessions at once, on a first-come, first-served basis via a Google URL application form or the QR code on the bottom of the poster.

Meanwhile, Seoul continues to provide Seoul Youngtech consultations to support systematic asset formation for young people. Six months after the project started, there have been 5,485 consultation applicants, with comprehensive financial consultations accounting for 68%, the highest proportion. Satisfaction scores are high, with 4.77 points for consultation satisfaction and 4.86 points for consultant satisfaction (out of 5). Among applicants, men account for 28%, significantly fewer than women at 72%, so various promotional efforts targeting men, such as in military units, are underway to increase male participation.

Additionally, to enable more young people to receive Youngtech consultations, additional funding was secured through supplementary budgets, expanding the target number of participants from 5,000 to 10,000. To accommodate the increased target, 24 more consultants were recruited, and efforts continue to improve consultation satisfaction through sharing consultation cases and supplementing consultation result reports. In June, a dedicated Seoul Youngtech consultation space will open at Seoul City Hall’s Citizen Hall, providing more convenient face-to-face consultation services for young people.

Kim Cheol-hee, Director of the Future Youth Planning Group, said, "After operating Seoul Youngtech for six months, we confirmed once again that Seoul Youngtech financial consultations and education are most timely for young adults who are managing their salary finances for the first time." He added, "We will continue to expand the program by listening more closely to the diverse voices of youth and collaborating with financial institutions and the Seoul Welfare Foundation to support young people’s financial situations."
